About ADHD Medication

There are many ADHD Medication options. Here are a few:

ADDERALL, ADDERALL XR
Adderall is a pill that contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, sometimes referred to as "Amphetamine Mixed Salts". Adderall comes in many different strengths, in tablet form and in capsule form.

CONCERTA (methylphenidate HCl) Extended-release Tablets CII
It is one of the many ADHD drugs that has methylphenidate as its active ingredient.
Concerta differentiates itself from other methylphenidate pills by a special time-release technology. Concerta does not completely digested and remnants of the Concerta tablet can often be seen in stools. Concerta is not recommended for people with gastrointestinal narrowing and digestive problems.

METADATE CD
(methylphenidate HCl, USP) Extended-Release Capsules CIIMetadate is another ADHD drug that has methylphenidate as its active ingredient.

RITALIN,
Is also called Methylphenidate Hydrochloride and is a central nervous system stimulant. It is primarily used for ADD and ADHD diagnosed patients.
Short term learning benefits have been achieved with this medication. Long term affects have been devastating. Various studies over the years have shown no significant improvement in children on Ritalin, compared to children not taking Ritalin. Some studies suggest that drug addiction and behavioral problems increase in later years with children who have used Ritalin.

According to the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR) adverse reactions can be, but are not limited to; insomnia, headaches, skin rashes, fever, anorexia, nausea, dizziness, palpitations, dyskinesia, drowsiness, blood pressure and pulse change, cardiac arrhythmias, liver damage, abdominal pain, weight loss, Tourette's syndrome and hair loss.

The Drug Enforcement (DEA) lists Ritalin as a Schedule II drug, in the same category as cocaine, methamphetamine and most other potent opiates and barbiturates. Ritalin also known as T-bal, smart drug, Vitamin R, is often used as a recreational drug, predominantly by college students to enhance focus and to get high, snorting Ritalin just like cocaine. Ritalin addiction can result in seizures, strokes, hyperthermia, hypertension and death.

The bottom line is that even though Ritalin controls some of the child's behavior for a very short amount of time, the long term effects are disturbing. What price are we willing to pay?

STRATTERA
Strattera is the only drug for ADHD that is not a stimulant of some sort. Since it is not a narcotic like all the others, refills are easier and the doctor can prescribe it over the phone. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you use Strattera before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. Long-term use can slow a child's growth. Strattera (atomoxetine) increased the risk of suicidal ideation in short-term studies in children or adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Clients should be monitored closely.
